Participants should recognize the relative importance of opioid receptors and pathways in mediating analgesia for headache and cranial syndromes as compared with other neuropathic pain syndromes of peripheral origin; understand the latest evidence for the role of opioid medications (as monotherapy and in combination) in the treatment of specific chronic neuropathic pain and headache syndromes; identify patients with risk factors for aberrant drug taking behavior with opioids and acquire strategies to mitigate these risks; recognize the strengths and weaknesses of the current evidence base for pain treatment and key gaps in our understanding of pain mechanisms.
