Participants should have greater familiarity with the individual properties of currently available AEDs, including the newest agents; how to choose the best first drug; and additional issues for refractory patients and for use of generic equivalents. The reasoning for early consideration of epilepsy surgery should be better understood, and participants should know how to identify and counsel the best candidates, in whom surgery is likely to be curative. Participants should also be aware of the potential role of herbal, behavioral, and dietary treatments in epilepsy.
