Participants should understand what palliative care is and the current educational materials available to teach resident and medical students palliative care; know the core principles of palliative care for patients with ALS; and discuss the current ethical and legal principles in withholding and withdrawing care, medical futility, patient requests for physician-assisted suicide and sedation in the imminently dying.
