Upon Completion:
Participants should be able to describe the process and ethical dimensions of genetic testing and counseling and the different types of genetic testing in children and adolescents, including pre-symptomatic testing for treatable versus non treatable conditions and prenatal testing; discuss important principles and responsibilities in phase 4 clinical trials, including subject privacy and confidentiality, the distinction between research subjects and patients, the potential for bias in funded studies, and financial pressures to induct and maintain subjects in longitudinal trials; identify different statutorily created criteria for selecting decision makers and the standards they must use when making end-of-life decisions, the influence of legislation on long-standing presumptions regarding withdrawal or withholding of artificial nutrition and hydration, and important ethical and legal distinctions that influence end-of-life decisions and withdrawal of therapies for newborns and children; and distinguish neurological and philosophical concepts of consciousness and describe the relationship between consciousness and decision making capacity and its ethical relevance to surrogate decision making for neurologically impaired patients.
