Participants should understand key criteria necessary to establish the diagnosis of PVS; be able to determine prognosis for individual patients in PVS based on etiology, related pathophysiology, and specific time frames; understand the need for intensive family caregiver counseling and support; understand the role of palliative care and hospice for PVS patients; and understand how the ethical and legal framework bears on decision making by the neurologist.
