Applications open for four UCNS subspecialty certification examinations

The (UCNS) is an independent nonprofit established by the AAN and four other leading neurology organizations. As the accrediting and certifying body for emerging neurological subspecialties, the UCNS provides a means of formal recognition and improved training standards for subspecialties.
The UCNS is now accepting applications for certification in four subspecialties. All initial examinations have 200 multiple-choice questions and are administered through in-person testing centers or online with virtual live proctoring.
Interventional Neurology
This four-hour examination will take place the week of September 21–25, 2026. The schedule is:
- Application deadline: March 1, 2026
- Extended application deadline ($500 fee applies): March 15, 2026
- Applicant determination notification and exam scheduling instructions emailed to applicants: Week of April 27, 2026
- Examination registration: May 4, 2026–September 4, 2026

Headache Medicine
This four-hour examination will take place the week of October 19–23, 2026. The schedule is:
- Application deadline: April 1, 2026
- Extended application deadline ($500 fee applies): April 15, 2026
- Applicant determination notification and exam scheduling instructions emailed to applicants: Week of May 25, 2026
- Examination registration: June 1, 2026–October 2, 2026

This four-hour examination will take place the week of November 16–20, 2026. The schedule is:
- Application deadline: May 1, 2026
- Extended application deadline ($500 fee applies): May 15, 2026

- Examination registration: July 1, 2026–October 30, 2026

This five-hour examination will take place the week of November 2–6, 2026. The schedule is:

- Examination registration: July 1, 2026–October 19, 2026
