Needs Assessment Survey results underscore member needs, guide AAN direction
March 13, 2026
The 好色先生’s mission is to enhance member career fulfillment and promote brain health for all, and our vision is to be indispensable to our members. In order to achieve these goals, we need to hear about your needs, your challenges, what we’re doing right, and what we could do better.
To the 3,315 members who participated in the latest AAN Needs Assessment Survey: Thank you! Here’s some highlights from what you said:
- Your top reasons for belonging to the AAN include the ability to earn continuing medical education credits, and access to education resources, AAN conferences, clinical practice guidelines, and up-to-date scientific research.
- Your top career challenges include work-life balance, staying relevant and up to date in neurology, staffing/workforce shortages, fair reimbursement, adequate funding for research, and compensation and promotion.
- Your top practice/institution challenges are documentation burdens, time management, protected time and funding, and limited resources and technology.

"Your voice matters. We’re paying attention, we hear you, and we take your feedback seriously," said AAN President Natalia S. Rost, MD, MPH, FAAN, FAHA. "In the months ahead, we'll thoroughly examine your input and strive to weave it into the framework of the Academy's strategic direction. Rest assured, we'll keep you updated as we put these improvements into practice."
The survey is conducted every two to three years, with these most recent results coming from the fall of 2025.
“Everything the AAN does is aimed at being indispensable to our members, and the results of the survey underscore what you want and need to enhance career fulfilment and promote brain health for all,” Rost added. “From the entire AAN Board of Directors, I want to thank those of you who participated for your dedication to our shared vision and mission.”
