Future neurologists: Try the new General Neurology Boot Camp at the Annual Meeting!

Are you a medical student or resident attending the AAN Annual Meeting? To help inspire the next generation of neurologists, we’re hosting a new six-session General Neurology Boot Camp at the 2026 Annual Meeting in Chicago.
Sessions will run from Sunday, April 19, through Tuesday, April 21, with most activities taking place at the Trainee Hub and a panel discussion at the Medical Student Symposium. Can’t make it in person? Select sessions will be available online, making it even easier to join the action, no matter where you are.
All General Neurology Boot Camp sessions are included with your Annual Meeting registration, so register now and add it to your itinerary.
“With our aging population and the growing need for neurologists, it’s absolutely essential that we expand the field to ensure patients get the care they need in the years ahead—so we can fulfill our commitment to improving lives and advancing brain health for all,” said Neil Masangkay, MD, FAAN, chair of the AAN General Neurology Boot Camp Work Group. “Our General Neurology Boot Camp is crafted to give medical students and residents a firsthand look at general neurology and the real life of a general neurologist. Adventure Awaits: Career Possibilities after Residency
Sunday, April 19 | 12:00 p.m.–1:00 p.m. CT | Trainee Hub
This session will offer residents an authentic look into the day-to-day work of neurologists across diverse practice settings, with an emphasis on general neurology. Discussion will explore perspectives from academic medicine, child and adult neurology, and urban and rural environments. Learn more.
Medical Student Symposium: You Can Do Anything in Neurology Panel Discussion
Sunday, April 19 | 1:30 p.m.–2:30 p.m. CT
This panel discussion will provide medical students with an authentic understanding of the day-to-day work of neurologists across diverse settings, including practice (specifically general neurology), academic neurology, research, and child neurology. It is part of the larger Medical Student Symposium taking place from 12:30 p.m.–5:00 p.m. CT. The Medical Student Symposium is designed for medical students to gain an understanding about careers in neurology, including the various subspecialty areas, and be able to network with residents and neurologists. So You Want to Be a Neurologist: Charting Your Path

This session will introduce medical students to the exciting and diverse career pathways within general neurology, highlighting the steps from transitioning from medical school to residency and potential fellowships. It aims to demystify the training process, showcase the breadth of general neurology practice, and inspire students to imagine themselves thriving in a field that offers intellectual challenge and flexible career trajectories. Finding your Groove: Scope and Practice Variation in General Neurology

This session will equip neurology residents with a clear understanding of clinical scenarios that general neurologists commonly manage and when a referral to a specialty neurologist is warranted. It aims to build residents’ confidence in defining their scope of practice as a general neurologist and applying a real-world referral framework to improve patient care and workflow efficiency. Neuro Tank: Pitching Procedures in General Neurology
Tuesday, April 21 | 11:30 a.m.–1:00 p.m. CT | Trainee Hub
This session will introduce medical students and residents to the wide range of procedures that fall within the scope of general neurology practice. It aims to demystify how neurologists obtain procedural training, demonstrate how procedures can enhance practice workflow and patient care, and provide insight into the practical realities, including time, skills, and revenue considerations, of incorporating procedures into a general neurology practice.
