American Brain Foundation (ABF) Scientific Breakthrough Award

About

The American Brain Foundation's annual Scientific Breakthrough Award recognizes an individual or group whose research has led to a major scientific breakthrough in treating or curing a brain disease or disorder. The award not only honors a highly deserving recipient, but also raises public awareness of the value of supporting neurologic research.

Recent recipients of the award include Jerry Mendell, MD, FAAN, whose breakthrough research on gene therapy as a cure for Spinal Muscular Atrophy shows promise for treating patients with Duchenne and Limb-Girdle Muscular Dystrophy; Michael D. Hill, MD, Andrew M. Demchuk, MD, and Mayank Goyal, MD, for advances in stroke neurology; Peter Goadsby, MD, PhD, FAAN, for the seminal discovery of the role of CGRP in the pathophysiology of migraine; Stephen L. Hauser, MD, whose early recognition of the potential for immunosuppression in MS treatment led to critical insights and breakthrough B-cell therapies; and Josep Dalmau, MD, PhD, FAAN and Vanda Lennon, MD, PhD for their work in the field of autoimmune and paraneoplastic neurology, having a major impact on the diagnosis and care of patients with autoimmune neurological diseases.

Eligibility

The nominee does not have to be a neurologist or neuroscientist to be eligible. The Scientific Breakthrough Award seeks to recognize science that cuts across brain diseases and has had, or has, great potential to have an impact on patients with neurological disease.
