Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) Grants

The AAN DEI Innovator Grants and AAN DEI Project Grants support projects, events, and activities that foster DEI (Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion) within academic neurology departments or the communities they serve.

DEI Innovator Grants

The DEI Innovator Grants support new, untested, and creative ideas that foster diversity, equity, and inclusion within academic neurology departments or the communities they serve. These grants are intended for those who are early in their DEI work or exploring innovative approaches. Students, residents, fellows, and early career faculty are especially encouraged to apply. Prior experience leading DEI projects is not required. Awardees will have the opportunity to share their ideas and build collaborations with Diversity Officers and other institutions.

At the selection stage, finalists will:

  • Pitch their ideas in a virtual meeting with the Diversity Officer Subcommittee
  • Receive feedback, guidance, and potential collaboration or funding opportunities 

Timeline

  • Applications open: July 29, 2026
  • Applications close: October 20, 2026, at 11:59 p.m. CT

Grant awarded

  • Two (2) $5,000 prizes
  • Recognition on the AAN Diversity Officer webpage
  • Opportunity to present to the Diversity Officer Subcommittee (virtual)

Eligibility

  • An active AAN member
  • Affiliated with an academic institution
  • Reside in the United States
  • Little or no prior experience in implementing DEI projects

Application requirements

Submit the following in PDF format:

  • Curriculum vitae 
  • Proposal (500 words or less) including: 
    • A detailed project description
    • A projected timeline with key milestones
    • An itemized budget identifying anticipated use of Grant funds
    • Please also address:  
      • What problem does your project address?
      • Who will benefit?
      • How will the project be implemented and promoted?
      • What impact and outcomes do you expect?

Grant expectations

  • Mid-year check-in: Virtual meeting with the Diversity Officer Subcommittee to provide a project status update
  • Final report: Summary of fund use and outcomes, plus a virtual presentation to the Diversity Officer Subcommittee

DEI Project Grants

The DEI Project Grants support projects, events, and activities that foster diversity, equity, and inclusion within academic neurology departments or the communities they serve. These grants are designed for those who have experience and are already working in the DEI space within their academic neurology departments. 

Timeline

  • Applications open: July 29, 2026
  • Applications close: October 20, 2026, at 11:59 p.m. CT

Grant awarded

  • Two (2) $5,000 prizes
  • Recognition on the AAN Diversity Officer webpage
  • Opportunity to present to the Diversity Officer Subcommittee (virtual)

Indirect cost policy

No indirect or overhead costs, including salary support and facilities/administrative costs, are permitted under these AAN grants. AAN grants support the recipient’s direct project costs only.
