  • Officer candidates must have experience on the AAN/AAN Institute Board of Directors, either as a committee chair or an elected director. All directors must be AAN members holding the Fellow (FAAN) or Distinguished Colleague (DAAN) designation, and all officers must be Fellows of the AAN.
  • Candidates must submit the following materials by May 18, 2026: (1) a 3-page or shorter curriculum vitae; (2) a list of current and past AAN volunteer leadership roles; (3) a complete and up-to-date AAN Relationship Disclosure Form; and (4) a personal statement.
    • The personal statement should be no more than 2 pages and should address:
      • Examples of how the candidate embodies the leadership qualities and competencies described in "Competencies and leadership qualities," particularly their ability to think strategically about neurology's future while advancing current organizational priorities; and
      • Which areas of expertise the candidate brings and how that applies to AAN Board Service and AAN’s strategic plan.

Competencies and leadership qualities

  • Candidates with future-focused thinking, creativity, and change-management skills are particularly valuable in helping to shape the AAN's future direction.
  • All candidates must demonstrate collaborative leadership skills (i.e., welcoming diverse viewpoints and being able to engage in constructive discourse), strategic focus (i.e., avoiding micromanagement and being able to prioritize), and broad knowledge of and demonstrated commitment to the AAN.

Expertise and experience

  • Candidates with expertise in addressing neurology workforce challenges, practice sustainability and transformation (including technological advancements), research funding expansion, public engagement, or advocating for neurology are sought.

The Nominations Committee may consider top candidates for any open position for which the candidate is eligible, not only the position(s) of greatest interest to the candidate. Candidates should note if they are only interested in a specific role or if there are roles for which they have no interest.

All nominations will be reviewed, and selections will be made in accordance with the Nominations Policy, the Relationships & Conflicts of Interest Policy, and the Implementing the Conflicts of Interest Policy for Academy Leadership document.
