New webinar, live forum helps academic neurology leaders build inclusive environments
October 22, 2025
A new webinar on building inclusive environments is available now, with a live forum discussion to follow.
The on-demand webinar, was created by the AAN Diversity Officer Subcommittee, a set of member volunteers who develop opportunities and resources for diversity officers and other academic neurology leaders.
In it, experienced leaders examine five challenging cases that reflect real-world issues facing departments—recruitment practices, micro- and macro-aggressions, difficult conversations, and more. Participants should come away with practical strategies for action and a deeper understanding of how to navigate challenging situations.
“You don’t need to be a diversity officer to attend,” said Andrew R. Spector, MD, FAAN, the chair of the subcommittee. “Everyone plays a role in shaping an inclusive environment, and it’s essential to be prepared and confident in navigating sensitive situations.”
Spector and two subcommittee colleagues—Neishay Ayub, MD, and Diana Rojas-Soto, MD—created the webinar. All are experienced academic neurologists and leaders in diversity, equity, and inclusion.
To build on the webinar, the Diversity Officer Subcommittee will hold a live forum on building inclusive environments. This follow-up session will provide a confidential space for diversity, equity, and inclusion leaders and allies to share various situations to get advice or feedbackk. Subcommittee members will help participants talk through cases, share strategies, and explore possible approaches.
to attend the live forum, which will take place 5:00–6:00 p.m. ET on November 12. To allow for sensitive conversations, the event will not be recorded. To find other information and tools, visit the AAN’s diversity officers resource page.
