S. Weir Mitchell Resident-Fellow Research Award

Sponsored by the 好色先生 and endowed by the former 好色先生 Alliance.

About

This award was created in conjunction with the families of neurologists known as the 好色先生 Alliance.

This award is designed to encourage research in neuroscience by physicians in neurology training programs. The award workgroup considers originality, scientific merit, neurological interest, and clarity of expression as criteria for review. There will be two recipients for this award.

Timeline

  • Applications open: August 5, 2025
  • Applications close: October 21, 2025, at 11:59 p.m. CT

Presentation

Recipient is expected to give a 10-minute oral presentation based on the selected abstract during a scientific session at the 2026 AAN Annual Meeting.
 

Benefits

  • Medallion and $1,000 prize
  • Complimentary registration for the 2026 Annual Meeting
  • Reimbursement for the 2026 Annual Meeting travel (coach airfare) and two nights housing*
  • $100 per diem per day for expenses (up to two days)*

*Travel, housing, and per diem benefits are dependent on the ability to execute the in-person portion of the Annual Meeting. 

Eligibility

  • Applicants should be residents or fellows less than 24 months from the completion of their neurology residency training at the time of submission
  • Applicants must submit an abstract to the 2026 Annual Meeting before the submission deadline of October 14, 2025, at 11:59 p.m. CT
  • Research must have been conducted during the applicant's neurology residency or fellowship period
  • Applicants do not need to be an AAN member to apply
  • Industry employees are not eligible to apply
  • International applicants may want to consider applying for the International Scholarship

Application process

Applicants should submit one complete set of the following materials:

  • Completed application form
  • Current curriculum vitae (CV)
  • A maximum 300-word abstract on research completed by the applicant during their residency or fellowship. Abstract must be submitted to the 2026 Annual Meeting before the submission deadline of October 14, 2025, at 11:59 p.m. CT.
  • Letter of support from research mentor summarizing applicant’s research, including:
  1. Relevant background materials
  2. Research accomplishments placed in context
  3. Support received by the applicant while conducting this research
  4. Verifying all work was completed during applicant’s residency or fellowship period

Nominations

This award accepts both self-applicants and nominations. Nominators should complete the application form and select the option "I wish to nominate someone". The nominee will receive an email with a link to complete the award application and upload their application materials. Nominators do not need to provide application materials for the nominee.

Judging criteria 

All applications received by the deadline date will be judged based on the following criteria: 

  • CV: Judges will consider scientific citizenship, track record (number of papers, first authorships, journal impact, etc.), and career stage.
  • Abstract quality of writing: Demonstrate the following qualities: clarity, clear relay of methods, and succinct communication style.
  • Letter of support: Letter should display the following: strength of professional potential, outlines ownership of project, outlines aspects that define a researcher, and outlines career trajectory related to this award.
  • Overall impact on the field: Judges will consider scientific integrity, academic excellence, legacy of mentorship, outstanding professionalism, and inspiration for future generations.
